History of Infidelity, Adultery, Affairs and Cheating & Unfaithful Spouses

The History of Infidelity

Infidelity, what does this often misinterpreted word really mean? Generally it brings to one’s mind the act of a married person committing the offence of extra marital sex or adultery. In common parlance this would simply mean   “being unfaithful“, ”cheating the spouse “ or “having an affair! However this word has been derived from the word “infidel” that has a religious forever being a reference  to a  “non believer” in the faith  or person lacking faith in it.  It also had the meaning of cheating in any form, for example, on one’s own faith. Over the passage of time “infidelity”   in common usage became synonymous with  “adultery” ,  a sin against the faith, any way. In effect, whether it is “adultery” or infidelity”; both refer to a breach of faith or a sacred vow. Infidelity is considered a grave crime in many parts of the world including the United States. Though the interpretation of the term varies from  region to region, or state to state as in the case of  USA, the offence itself is punishable in the law. In the Middle East for example it is a crime punishable by lashings or in the worst case even  death by stoning.  Infidelity, which in the present context takes the   meaning of   adultery, is a sin committed against God, forbidden in the 7th of the  Ten Commandments (Exodus), Deuteronomy and other places. As a matter of fact all major religions of the world  consider infidelity as  morally  bad .Infidelity also called philandery, is the major cause of divorce in marriages as shown by many a  survey conducted among divorce lawyers, offenders and the innocent parties the percentage being specially high  in the case of the first time divorces. Irrespective of the religious and moral taboos imposed, cheating spouses has been going on since time immemorial! The biblical scriptures refer to incidences where the sin has been committed by non other than the godly men themselves. Abraham and Jacob are two classic examples. Over the centuries the definitions and interpretation of the act of adultery kept on  changing. In the New Testament alone the interpretations differ in the three gospels according to the Saints Matthew, Mark and Luke. The early civilizations such as Egyptian, Roman , Greek and  Indian  differed  in  their views  as to the interpretation but at  the core the act in some form  remained  morally unacceptable. All the prohibitions, taboos, laws against, have  not been able to curb  the  activities of adulterers. Some recent researches have indicated that the human male is polygamous in nature. The majority of married offenders are male some studies how, which is quite in line with this theory. Some other findings have indicated half the cases of infidelity end in divorce. No wonder the world of literature and art has found infidelity a fertile field for their creations. From Shakespeare to modern day writers have explored and exploited the human emotions, love, lust, murder, mayhem, tragedy and  comedy  inherent  with  adultery. Classic work like Othello, Anna Karanina, Dr.Szivago, Brokenback Mountain are good examples of this  from different Spheres of literature and art. Cheating spouse may be high entertainment for  some. But to the cheated invariably end up in misery unless of course the law of the country provide some redress for them. For this it is imperative sufficient unshakable evidence is  gathered  by the offended party  and made available to the law enforcers  in the event of a divorce suite.  Enter the Private Investigator aka Private Detective aka the Private Eye! The life and work of a Private Investigator is well depicted ted in the classic character of Drake, the right hand man of the fictitious criminal lawyer Perry Mason, a creation of the Lawyer writer Early Stanley Gardner, well loved  by the  English detective  story readers even to the modern day. How the crafty lawyer obtain the services of a Private Investigator to gather evidence to establish the innocence of his client and the extend of  tedious work carried out by the Drake Detective  Agency   is amazingly realistic and  enlightening too. Though Drake Detective Agency is fictitious, the modern day Private Eye is very real as the adulterers themselves are. Historically the Frenchman, Eugène François Vidocq, a soldier, criminal and privateer, is credited with the establishment of the first recorded  private detective agency in 1833 which went by the  name Le bureau des reassignments (Office of Intelligence) and hired other criminal elements of the day to assist him!. Vidocq is also credited with having introduced record-keeping, criminology and ballistics to criminal investigation. He is said to have made the first plaster casts of shoe impressions and a host of other inventions, the  tools of his trade. He is also said to have inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the creation of the immortal detective character Sherlock Holmes.  Soon after Vidocq, the Private Investigating Organizations came in to being in the United States due to pioneering efforts of Allan Pinkerton who established the private enterprise Pinkerton National Detective Agency, a security guard and detective agency.  Pinkerton became famous when he foiled an assassination attempt on the then President elect of America Abraham Lincoln. Allan Pinkerton’s work is legendary in spite of  some infamous activities by his staff in settling certain industrial disputes at the time.  Failure or inadequacies of law officers at the time made these agencies thrive in the by gone days . They even acted partially as law enforcement officers at times of need. On the negative side they were also often called in to settle labor disputes and other similar issues by the business tycoons of the day. Some early private investigators were anyway nothing  but outfits of  mercenaries and professional  soldiers  out  of work helping private entities with problems that could be better solved  by the show of  force or military style action, usually out side the  united states. Incidentally it is the Pinkerton Agency's logo, an eye embellished with the words "We Never Sleep" inspired the now familiar term “private eye” However  it was not until the 1920s that the private investigator became a person within reach  to the average US citizen. Since then the  Private Investigation Agencies have grown with the changing needs of the public. Social issues like infidelity, fraud, criminal investigations extra to that of the law, civil disputes, industrial espionage and others needing investigation have influenced the growth of  enterprises of  Private Investigators. Today, as more and more technical advances make the adulterers’ and other social misfits’ activities  easy and carefree, the private investigators too have to be  equipped with hi-tech devices to make their  clients day. Caching the culprit in the act and making it stick is easy for a genuine properly equipped licensed professional. Professionalism is what ultimately will matter when it comes to the  presentation of the victims case when seeking redress for example in a divorce suite based on infidelity.  If infidelity is your problem, as professional licensed private investigators we would be happy to talk with you about it.
